OpenAI unveiled its new AI chatbot, ChatGPT Gov, for US government agencies as the Chinese AI DeepSeek disrupts the industry.

It allows the public sector to “more easily manage their own security, privacy and compliance requirements.”

The official OpenAI website shares the following ChatGPT Gov features:

  • Saving and sharing conversations within government workspace

  • Uploading text and image files

  • Accessing OpenAI’s flagship GPT-4o model for text interpretation, summarization, coding, image interpretation and mathematics

  • Enabling employees to build and share custom GPT models within their government workspace

  • Providing an administrative console for CIOs and IT teams to manage users, groups, Custom GPTs, single sign-on (SSO), etc.

OpenAI says the new AI model reflects its commitment to helping the US government use its technologies.

How governments use AI

It also notes more than 3,500 US federal, state and local government agencies have been using ChatGPT since 2024.

 Here are some examples:

  • Air Force Research Laboratory uses ChatGPT Enterprise to improve access to internal resources and basic coding and to support AI education.

  • Commonwealth of Pennsylvania employees save time on routine tasks like analyzing project requirements, thanks to ChatGPT.

  • Los Alamos National Laboratory facilitates research and innovation with ChatGPT Enterprise to advance bioscientific research.

  • Minnesota State’s Enterprise Translations Office uses ChatGPT Team to provide more expedient and accurate translation services.

As mentioned, ChatGPT Gov will likely be the US government’s latest AI tool.

National governments outside the United States have also been using ChatGPT to improve public services.

For example, Japan’s Yokosuka City uses a “siloed” version of ChatGPT to enhance operations and reduce business hours.

Being “siloed” means the Japanese government uses a dedicated data center to operate the AI bot, ensuring cybersecurity.

Meanwhile, the Chinese government hails its latest DeepSeek AI as a triumph in artificial intelligence innovation.

Chinese researchers have developed the tool with a significantly lower budget than their US counterparts.

It’s an open-source program that can run without the Internet. Yet, it can match and even outperform paid models from Western AI firms.

As a result, DeepSeek has been shaking up US markets and the global AI industry.

The Philippine government has also been implementing AI tools.

It has many pending AI regulations that will reduce potential risks.
