The Department of Education (DepEd) and Microsoft are working together to improve Philippine education with generative AI and skilling programs for students and teachers.

This collaboration is part of the Presidential Digitalization Blueprint. Department of Education Secretary, Sonny Angara, explained their long-term objectives:

“These programs with Microsoft have delivered immediate, scalable results and we will continue to integrate technologies and equip educators with necessary skills to foster innovation in every classroom.”

DepEd educators explored the potential of AI in upgrading learning experiences at an ongoing AI immersion program.

This initiative empowers teachers nationwide to integrate Microsoft 365 Copilot into their workflows.

As a result, students receive a more interactive and engaging learning experience while boosting efficiency and productivity.

The Microsoft Copilot Classroom Hack activity is part of this AI immersion, and it shows teachers saved an average of 9-20 hours on ancillary tasks.

Joseph Arnold Labaguis, a Grade 10 Teacher attendee from Marinduque National High School, commended the AI tool:

“Copilot automates routine administrative tasks, such as creating lesson plans, tracking attendance, generating reports, and grading assignments.”

“This will save me time and allow me to focus more on engaging with students and improving my instructional methods,” he added.

The Education Department and Microsoft have also been driving the adoption of generative AI-powered teaching platforms like Reading Progress and Reading Coach.

These are Microsoft Teams features that help teachers assess reading fluency. Students record their readings, and then these tools analyze them for accuracy and pronunciation.

As a result, educators spend less time assessing students, and they can share more actionable insights to improve student outcomes.

In Bais City, Dumaguete, the Reading Progress tool improves reading assessments, automates evaluations, and supplements data from the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory.

The DepEd-Microsoft AI program upskilled 500 teachers from 65 schools through a virtual capacity-building workshop.

As a result, the initiative assessed 14,000 learners and achieved full implementation in 60 schools.

Teachers have also gained significant efficiency and learning improvements with Reading Progress, reducing assessment time from two days to two hours.

Moreover, students improved their reading levels within three months through consistent evaluations.

Nowadays, DepEd is exploring how to integrate Microsoft Copilot within their Central Office and expand AI skilling nationwide.
