Ex-President Duterte cries illegal detention, questions ICC warrant

MANILA, Philippines — Former president Rodrigo Duterte cried out illegal detention at Villamor Airbase after he was served an arrest warrant from the International Criminal Court (ICC).

Based on a series of videos posted by Duterte’s daughter, Veronica or “Kitty,” on Instagram, Duterte raised the issue inside at Villamor Airbase on Tuesday while in a conversation with Prosecutor General Anthony Fadullon.

In the video, Duterte dared Fadullon to explain to him why he was deprived of liberty.

“What is the law and what is the crime that I committed?” said Duterte in a video posted by his daughter on Instagram.

“Show it to me now, the legal basis for my being here. As I, apparently, I was brought here not of my own volition. It is somebody else’s,” he added.

Former Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea, who was also present in their conversation, pointed out that no apparent case was presented to Duterte when he was served an arrest warrant.

He also reminded Fadullon that the country was no longer a member state of the ICC.

“Don’t you feel bothered that we are doing this, we are following an entity that we are no longer a member of, we have withdrawn from?” Medialdea said in Filipino.

Duterte’s arrest came amid a case before the International Criminal Court (ICC) for alleged crimes against humanity during his administration’s bloody war on drugs.

The drug war left at least 6,000 people dead, with human rights groups reporting at least 20,000.

Duterte was arrested immediately upon his arrival from Hong Kong Tuesday morning.
