Hope Amidst Rubble: Radar Detects Potential Survivor in Collapsed Bangkok Building

Hope Amidst Rubble: Radar Detects Potential Survivor in Collapsed Bangkok Building

Provided by Nation.

Rescue teams report positive signals and locate a body deep within the debris of the Auditor General's Office collapse, raising hopes of a first rescue

Rescue workers at the site of the collapsed State Audit Office building in Chatuchak have reported a significant breakthrough, raising hopes for survivors trapped beneath the debris.

Teams from the Phetkasem Foundation detected a mobile phone signal emanating from Zone B, and subsequent radar scans have pinpointed what appears to be a human body approximately three metres below the surface. Rescuers estimate a 90% chance the individual is alive.

The detected signal is currently undergoing further verification to confirm its source.

Earlier reports from the scene at 8:30 AM indicated that this positive sign is believed to correspond to the first potential casualty located, initially thought to be situated at a depth of one metre. A second individual is believed to be deeper within the wreckage, at around three metres.

Emergency crews are now focused on widening an existing cavity to improve access to the potential survivors and are continuously pumping fresh air into the confined space below.

The teams currently working at this critical location include personnel from the Phetkasem Foundation, Jai Tueng Jai rescue organisation, the Haroon Foundation, and international assistance from the USA. These teams initially identified a light source and heard the sound of a mobile phone ringing from within the collapsed structure at approximately 7:20 AM.

Rescue volunteer Chanavich Sangkhum, from the Phetkasem Bangkok Foundation, was instrumental in this discovery, alerting officials after hearing the faint ringing of a mobile phone beneath the Zone B rubble. This prompted the use of cameras for initial investigation.

Chanavich reported that multiple rescue teams are collaborating to widen the front opening of the debris pile and are maintaining a constant flow of fresh air into the voids within.

The immediate priority is the urgent removal of internal concrete debris to create a wider passage towards the area where light was sighted. Infrared cameras have since confirmed the presence of vital signs within the rubble.

A significant obstacle for the rescue operation is a large concrete slab precariously resting on an overhead beam. Widening the access point requires extremely careful and controlled procedures, with safety paramount due to the considerable risk of the slab collapsing and endangering the rescue workers.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration has provided the following update on the rescue efforts following the collapse of the State Audit Office building in Chatuchak district, triggered by the recent earthquake in neighbouring Myanmar:
