Kyushu Electric Power President Kazuhiro Ikebe (2nd Right) Informs Saga Governor Yoshinori Yamaguchi of Decision to Decommission Genkai No. 2 Reactor in Meeting at Prefectural Government Office
The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent monster tsunami waves on March 11 2011 severely damaged Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. A breakdown of cooling systems left nuclear reactors overheating, resulting in core meltdowns. The accident and suspension of other plants in the quake-hit areas have caused serious power supply shortages in various parts of eastern Japan including Tokyo.
