Rehab Project Continues to Honor Probation Officer's Legacy

Kusatsu, Shiga Pref., May 24 (Jiji Press)--A year after the murder of a probation officer in Shiga Prefecture, western Japan, his colleagues are continuing a project he started to help those on probation rebuild their lives.
The project was launched in April 2023, more than a year before Hiroshi Shinjo, then 60, was murdered at his home in the Shiga city of Otsu on May 24 last year by a man he was supporting on probation.
"Shiga Kaname Project" was named by Shinjo when he was secretary-general of the Shiga prefectural association for offender rehabilitation services.
The project aims to provide support in cooperation with local education- and welfare-related organizations and groups, as it is difficult for volunteer probation officers alone to help those on probation, who have varying circumstances and issues they want to discuss with officers.
Under the project, a total of 13 probation officers act as coordinators in nine districts in Shiga.
