Japan's Exports to U.S. Fall 11.1 Pct in May

   Tokyo, June 18 (Jiji Press)--Japan's exports to the United States fell 11.1 pct from a year before to 1,514 billion yen in May, marking the second consecutive month below the year-before level, Finance Ministry preliminary data showed Wednesday.
   Japan's U.S.-bound automobile exports plunged 24.7 pct due to the additional tariffs imposed by the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump.
   The number of Japanese automobiles exported to the United States in May totaled 103,000 units, falling by only 3.9 pct. As a reason for the slight decrease, an industry source mentioned the possibility of automakers covering part of the additional tariffs.
   Exports of auto parts and steel fell 19.0 pct and 1.5 pct, respectively. Both goods are also subject to the U.S. additional tariffs.
   In trade with the United States, Japan posted a trade surplus of 451.7 billion yen, as its imports declined 13.5 pct to 1,062.3 billion yen.
