(Update) Tsunami Advisory Issued for Pacific Areas of Japan
Tokyo, July 30 (Jiji Press)--The Japan Meteorological Agency on Wednesday issued a tsunami advisory to many areas facing the Pacific, including the eastern part of Hokkaido, the country's northernmost prefecture.
Tsunamis of up to 1 meter are expected to reach these coastal areas, the agency said. The advisory was issued following an earthquake with a magnitude of 8.0 that struck near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, located northeast of Hokkaido, around 8:25 a.m. the same day.
Subject to the tsunami advisory are Pacific coastal areas from Hokkaido to the Boso Peninsula in eastern Japan and Tokyo's Ogasawara Islands, as well as coastal areas of the central prefecture of Shizuoka, the Kii Peninsula in western Japan and the southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki, according to the agency.
