(Update) Japan Ruling Bloc, DPFP Agree to Cut Gasoline Prices in June
Tokyo, April 4 (Jiji Press)--The secretaries-general of Japan's ruling parties and the opposition Democratic Party for the People agreed on Friday to take action to lower gasoline prices from June to cut the impact of persisting inflation.
The three parties, including the Liberal Democratic Party and Komeito, are considering expanding the subsidies that the government pays to oil wholesalers to keep retail gasoline prices at around 185 yen per liter. Details are expected to be discussed soon.
The agreement was reached at a meeting called by DPFP Secretary-General Kazuya Shinba following Wednesday's announcement of reciprocal tariffs by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Shinba called for abolishing the provisional gasoline tax surcharge in line with a pact reached among the secretaries-general of the three parties last December.
Hiroshi Moriyama, the LDP's secretary-general, said that it will take time to revise the tax system, proposing discussions on an alternative measure.
