Prime Minister Shinzo Abe (3rd Right) Visits 'Difficult-to-Return' Areas around JR Joban Line's Futaba Station in Futaba, Fukushima Prefecture
The 9.0-magnitude earthquake and subsequent monster tsunami waves on March 11 2011 severely damaged Tokyo Electric Power Co.'s Fukushima No. 1 nuclear plant. A breakdown of cooling systems left nuclear reactors overheating, resulting in core meltdowns. The accident and suspension of other plants in the quake-hit areas have caused serious power supply shortages in various parts of eastern Japan including Tokyo.
