6 Plaintiffs Died during Long Court Battles over Sterilizations

Tokyo, July 3 (Jiji Press)--Six plaintiffs have died during prolonged court battles against the Japanese government over forced sterilizations performed under the now-defunct eugenic protection law.
Forced sterilization lawsuits have so far been filed at 12 district courts and their branches nationwide by a total of 39 plaintiffs, mainly in their 60s to 90s.
A plaintiff with hearing impairment using the pseudonym Tatsuo Takao who lived in the western prefecture of Hyogo died in 2020, according to lawyers.
Takao had said, "I want the court to clearly determine that the government was wrong."
Kimiko Kobayashi, another hearing-impaired plaintiff from Hyogo, died in 2022. At a court hearing, she said in sign language, "Please restore my body."
