Saigo Becomes 5th Japanese Woman to Win Major Golf Title
The Woodlands, Texas, April 27 (Jiji Press)--Mao Saigo won the 2025 Chevron Championship in The Woodlands, Texas, on Sunday, becoming the fifth Japanese golfer to claim one of the five major titles for women.
Saigo, 23, picked up her first U.S. LPGA tour victory by surviving a five-way playoff after finishing second in two tournaments in the previous season and receiving the rookie of the year award. With her win, Japanese women have prevailed in all five LPGA majors.
"I'm really delighted that my first tour victory turned my dream of winning a major championship into reality," she said in an interview.
In the Chevron tournament, Saigo got off to a slow start but improved her score on the second and third days. However, she failed to maintain the lead with a 2-over-par in the final round and advanced to the unprecedented five-way playoff.
"As my entire body tensed up, I was not able to think about anything other than about the ball right in front of me ... I did my very best to roll in a putt while trying to stop my body from shaking," she said.
