Japanese Manga in Little Known Crisis (1)

   Behind the worldwide popularity of Japanese manga comics lies a hidden threat: the gradual deterioration--and potential loss--of original manga artwork. Recent research has revealed striking similarities between the current state of manga drawings and the fate of "ukiyo-e" woodblock prints, many of which were removed from Japan decades ago.
   In a two-part series, Jiji Press examines the unsettling risks facing a nation celebrated as a global "manga superpower," and highlights the efforts underway to preserve its irreplaceable manga heritage.
