Vietnam welcomes Russia's proposal to resume talks with Ukraine
Vietnam welcomes a recent proposal by Russian President Vladimir Putin to resume direct peace talks with Ukraine, spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Pham Thu Hang said on Monday.
Responding to a question over Vietnam's reaction to Russian President Putin's proposal, Hang said Vietnam's consistent position is to support the peaceful settlement of disputes and disagreements through dialogue, in accordance with international law and the United Nations Charter, while taking into account the legitimate interests of all related parties, for the sake of peace, stability, cooperation, and development in the region and the world.
Last weekend, President Putin proposed direct talks with Ukraine on Thursday in Istanbul, Turkey.
"It was not Russia that broke off negotiations in 2022. It was Kyiv. Nevertheless, we are proposing that Kyiv resume direct negotiations without any preconditions," Reuters quoted the Russian leader as saying.
"Despite everything, we offer the Kyiv authorities to resume negotiations already on Thursday in Istanbul."
Putin said the purpose of the negotiations is to eliminate the root causes of the conflict in order to establish a long-term, lasting peace for the historical perspective.
The Russian leader added that he would soon speak with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan to ask Turkey to help facilitate the negotiations.
Russian and Ukrainian negotiators previously held direct talks in Istanbul in the early weeks of the conflict, but they failed to reach an agreement and the negotiations have since stalled.
This time, Putin "is committed to serious negotiations with Ukraine."
Previously, Putin had declared a three-day ceasefire to mark Victory Day, which ended on Sunday.
For weeks, the U.S. and Ukraine have been pushing for a 30-day ceasefire proposal, but Russia has yet to accept it.
