The Yoshijima House is a masterpiece of architecture by Takayama’s renowned Meiji-era craftsman Isaburo Nishida. Its refined spatial beauty is a superb embodiment of Japanese craftsmanship and aesthetics.

Toko Shinoda (1913-2021), a globally acclaimed artist whose popularity continues to grow through her essays and her internationally acclaimed artwork, was a relative of the Yoshijima family. She held deep affection for the Yoshijima House and left behind many works, including major pieces, for the Yoshijima family.
What links Toko Shinoda and the Yoshijima House is their shared “aesthetics of space.” By stripping away the unnecessary, the inherent beauty of the space is brought into sharp relief.

However, the relationship between Toko Shinoda and the Yoshijima family has not been widely known until now. With the goal of passing on this valuable cultural heritage and history to future generations, Yoshijima House - YOSHIJIMA'S ATELIER has planned this exhibition with the cooperation of The Tolman Collection, which enjoyed a longstanding friendship with Toko Shinoda. Approximately 30 works, including those from the gallery’s holdings will be on view during this summer exhibition.
This exhibition will provide a rare opportunity for the artworks of Toko Shinoda to resonate within the space of the Yoshijima House.
Takayama attracts many visitors from abroad. We hope that this occasion will allow both Japanese and international guests to experience the essence of Japanese aesthetics.
