Since its first outbreak in Wuhan, a major Chinese city in Hubei Province, in December 2019, a novel coronavirus has infected tens of thousands of people and killed more than the virus causing severe acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, did in 2003. Although most of the victims have been in mainland China, the pneumonia-causing coronavirus has been spread to elsewhere in the world including Japan by carriers chiefly from Wuhan during the New Lunar Year holiday in China. The World Health Organization has declared the new virus outbreak a global health emergency.
