The Tokyo Paralympic Games kicked off on Aug. 24 for a 13-Day run, after one-year postponement due to the novel coronavirus pandemic. During the period, more than 4,400 athletes from 161 countries and regions plus a small group of refugees competed in 539 events in 22 sports. As was the case for the Tokyo Olympics, which ended earlier the same month, the Paralympics was held with strict virus prevention measures in place, including shutting spectators, except for some willing school students, out of almost all event venues. Despite the tough environment, however, Japanese athletes performed superbly to demonstrate their infinite potential, winning 51 medals including 13 golds in 12 sports.
