(Update) Japan to Promote Perovskite Thin Solar Cells

Tokyo, Nov. 26 (Jiji Press)--Japan will promote the use of perovskite solar cells, thin and foldable like films, to achieve an annual power generation capacity of 20 gigawatts by 2040, the industry ministry said Tuesday.
Twenty gigawatts, roughly equivalent to the combined output capacity of 20 nuclear reactors, are large enough to power some 6 million households.
It costs more to generate electricity with the next-generation solar cells than with conventional ones, so the ministry hopes to cut the cost by supporting research and development and mass production. If the cost can be slashed, the ministry will raise the annual capacity target to 40 gigawatts or more.
The ministry held a public-private meeting with companies and local governments Tuesday to draw up a strategy including the target.
Projecting that foreign demand for perovskite solar cells will rise to more than 500 gigawatts in terms of output capacity, the ministry aims to establish a system for mass production.
