Sao Paulo, March 25 (Jiji Press)--Japan House Sao Paulo kicked off an exhibition Tuesday to display a house made of paper tubes for disaster evacuees, amid rising interest in disaster response in Brazil following a series of natural disasters.
Designed by Japanese architect Shigeru Ban, the Paper Log House, to be displayed until May 4 at the cultural center in the biggest Brazilian city is modeled on a temporary housing unit built for evacuees in a massive earthquake that hit Kobe and other western Japan areas in 1995.
The paper tube structure was also used as a temporary workshop for artisans of the traditional "Wajima-nuri" lacquerware in Ishikawa Prefecture, central Japan, after the area was struck by a huge earthquake Jan. 1 last year.
The biggest strength of the paper tube house is that it can be built quickly and at a low cost.
While the particular housing unit on display at Japan House Sao Paulo took three weeks to build due to adjustments made to accommodate wheelchair users, the construction of a regular unit usually takes only a week.
