Japan Infrastructure Biz Working to Cut Nankai Quake Damage

Tokyo, April 1 (Jiji Press)--Japanese infrastructure businesses are stepping up measures to reduce damage from a possible huge earthquake in the Nankai Trough off Japan.
Such a temblor, forecast to happen off the Pacific coast of central to southwestern Japan, along with subsequent tsunami, is expected to cause power outages at 29.5 million buildings, according to the latest estimates on damage from the Nankai quake disaster by a government panel released Monday.
The number increased 9 pct from the previous estimate. In addition, it is expected to take longer than previously estimated to restore mobile phone services in the disaster-affected areas.
Power utilities, telecommunications carriers and other infrastructure companies are working on measures to reduce damage and strengthen cooperation beyond company boundaries to ensure early recovery.
Following the possible Nankai quake, power supply capacity would fall to as low as about 20 pct of peak demand at power plants in disaster-hit areas. If such a facility is flooded by tsunami, its service area would suffer a long-term power shortage. It is expected to take about one to two weeks to restore power.
