Japan FY 2024 Job Availability Down for 2nd Straight Year

Japan FY 2024 Job Availability Down for 2nd Straight Year

Tokyo, May 2 (Jiji Press)--Japan's average ratio of job openings to job seekers in fiscal 2024 fell 0.04 point from the previous year to 1.25, down for the second consecutive year, the labor ministry said Friday.
Despite persistent labor shortages, companies were reluctant to offer jobs, due to rising material costs amid inflation.
The data shows the number of job openings per job seeker at Hello Work public job placement offices nationwide.
"While (the employment situation) has not fully recovered to the level before the COVID-19 pandemic, high U.S. tariffs under the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump, in addition to inflation, are increasing uncertainty," a ministry official said.
Meanwhile, the unemployment rate averaged 2.5 pct in the fiscal year that ended in March, down 0.1 percentage point, according to the internal affairs ministry.
