Japan Household Spending Down 0.1 Pct in April

Tokyo, June 6 (Jiji Press)--Japanese household spending dipped 0.1 pct in April from a year before after adjustment for inflation mainly because of lower expenditures on clothing and household durable goods, the internal affairs ministry said Friday.
The average spending by households with two or more members stood at 325,717 yen.
Spending on food edged up 0.3 pct, the first increase in eight months. Expenditures on vegetables and seaweed rose 1.5 pct, increasing for the first time in two years, as lettuce and tomato prices stabilized. Spending on rice was up 1.5 pct, the first rise in three months. Expenditures on eating out also increased.
Spending on clothes and shoes fell 2.1 pct. Clothing expenditures dropped 5.8 pct as lower temperatures are believed to have sapped demand for summer clothes.
Expenditures on furniture and housework goods dipped 0.4 pct, and those on household durables including air conditioners and microwaves dropped 6.8 pct.
