Marcos: Value the nation’s heritage by protecting rights, freedoms

MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., in celebration of the 127th Anniversary of the Proclamation of Philippine Independence, called on Filipinos to value the nation’s heritage by protecting their rights and freedoms and using these to uplift and safeguard the people.

In his message, the president also said, “So, let us continue to bear the vigor of our ancestors as we defend our nation against those who seek to diminish the strength of our people.”

He emphasized the importance of honoring the country’s “priceless freedom” by building a nation “worthy of the sacrifices made by our heroes.”

“May you endeavor to enhance your abilities and character to give more to our nation. Through our collective efforts, we will forge the path of progress, stability, and prosperity for our present and future generations,” he said.

It was on June 12, 1898, when the Philippine flag was unfurled in the sky in Kawit, Cavite, as a declaration of the country’s long-desired freedom.

Marcos described the road to that historic moment as “long, arduous, and costly, requiring the sacrifice of selfless individuals for over a century.”

“Because of their heroism, we now enjoy the rights and privileges reserved for those who have a country they can call their own,” he also said.

The president also noted that the freedom won by our forebears has inspired generations to serve causes that promote the welfare of society and humanity.

“This precious gift has also encouraged countless individuals to dedicate their diligence and devotion to their respective fields for the glory of our great nation,” he further said.

As part of the Independence Day celebration, Marcos is set to lead a wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Monument in Luneta and attend the Independence Day Parade at the Quirino Grandstand.

A Vin d’Honneur is also scheduled later in the day at the Ceremonial Hall of Malacañang Palace. /cb
