Chief justice on Independence day: Combat corruption, apathy

MANILA, Philippines — Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo on Thursday said the struggle for independence is no longer just about foreign powers, but also about internal adversaries— corruption, indifference, and abuse.

"Our enemies today are not just foreign forces—they include the corruption and apathy we tolerate in our own backyard," Gesmundo said in Filipino in his speech during the 127th Independence Day celebration in Kawit, Cavite.

Gesmundo said that public servants should not turn a blind eye to the fact that many reforms still need to be done.

"Meaningful freedom does not end just because we are now leading our country – it should motivate us to strive for a more just society," he said.

"True independence comes with accountability to the people."

He called on Filipinos to embody the principles of national heroes by dedicating themselves to helping those in need and courageously confronting domestic challenges.

Gesmundo concluded his message by reaffirming that independence is not a reward that should be taken for granted

"Freedom is not a reward given because our efforts are over – it is a purpose we strengthen every day."

He urged everyone to celebrate freedom through action, teaching future generations the values of patriotism, sacrifice for the greater good, and unwavering perseverance for the nation's continuous improvement.
