Vietnamese company proposes developing first high-rise pig farms
Ho Chi Minh City-based BAF Vietnam Agriculture Joint Stock Company has proposed building two six-story smart pig farming complexes in the southern provinces of Tay Ninh and Binh Phuoc, marking the first of their kind in Vietnam.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Environment said on Thursday that Deputy Minister Phung Duc Tien had chaired a meeting with the ministry's Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health and other relevant units to discuss piloting this multi-story farming model.
At the meeting, Nguyen Van Minh, deputy CEO of BAF Vietnam, which is engaged in livestock farming and animal feed production, said it had submitted proposals for the two projects.
The first, located in Tan Chau District, Tay Ninh, would house 64,000 sows and produce 1.6 million commercial pigs annually.
The second, in Dong Phu District, Binh Phuoc, would raise 20,000 sows and yield 500,000 pigs a year.
Both projects are planned in partnership with Muyuan Foods Co., Ltd., China's largest pig farming enterprise, known for pioneering multi-story livestock facilities.
These smart farms will integrate advanced technologies for management, waste treatment, air filtration, odor control, and environmental protection.
Despite a national standard for multi-story pig farming, Minh noted that the legal framework remains unclear in key areas such as environmental regulations, construction permits, and environmental impact assessments.
This lack of clarity has complicated the approval process for the projects, he said.
Pham Kim Dang, deputy director of the Department of Livestock Production and Animal Health, stated that the smart pig farming model aligns with national efforts to promote the application and transfer of scientific and technological advances in agriculture.
Dang emphasized that environmental safeguards and disease prevention must be top priorities, especially given the high animal density and enclosed farming environment.
In addition to infrastructure and disease control, Dang highlighted the need for strict oversight of slaughtering, processing, and product traceability.
Deputy Minister Tien, meanwhile, instructed the department to work closely with the company in reviewing the legal basis for project implementation.
Tien also stressed the importance of risk management plans, product distribution strategies, and completion of all required procedures before construction begins.
