Japan's Trade Deficit Expands 14 Pct in Fiscal 1st Half

   Tokyo, Oct. 17 (Jiji Press)--Japan's customs-cleared trade deficit expanded 14.4 pct to 3,106.7 billion yen in the fiscal first half ended last month from a year before, the Finance Ministry said in a preliminary report on Thursday.
   Exports rose 6.6 pct to 53,550.4 billion yen, the largest level for any fiscal half-year, led by increased shipments of semiconductor manufacturing equipment. Imports climbed faster, gaining 7 pct to 56,657.1 billion yen as purchases of computers surged.
   In September alone, the country posted a trade deficit of 294.3 billion yen, the third straight month of red ink.
