Japan's Job Openings Ratio Up for 1st Time in 4 Months

Tokyo, March 4 (Jiji Press)--Japan's ratio of effective job openings to seekers rose for the first time in four months in January, the labor ministry said Tuesday.
The ratio, which shows the number of jobs available per seeker registered at Hello Work public job placement offices nationwide, stood at 1.26 times, up 0.01 point from the previous month.
The number of effective job seekers fell 0.3 pct to 1.91 million, while the number of effective job openings rose 0.2 pct to 2.4 million.
By prefecture, the job openings-to-seekers ratio was highest in Fukui Prefecture at 1.85, while the lowest ratio was 1.06 in Hokkaido.
Labor shortages are still serious in the country, ministry officials said, citing a comment from Hello Work staff that a security staff shortfall for January's unified university entrance examinations in one prefecture had to be resolved with staff dispatched by companies elsewhere.
