Washington, Feb. 6 (Jiji Press)--U.S. President Donald Trump may "test" Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba at their upcoming summit, a U.S. expert well-versed in Japan-related affairs has said.
Ishiba and Trump will hold their first face-to-face summit at the White House on Friday.
Nicholas Szechenyi, vice president of the Geopolitics and Foreign Policy Department at the U.S. Center for Strategic and International Studies, said he expects Trump to "test Ishiba and see how strong he is."
Asked about the possibility that Trump will demand a further increase in Japan's defense spending or threaten the Asian ally with additional tariffs, Szechenyi said that he may "put pressure" on Ishiba or criticize Japan over such issues.
Ishiba should then explain "confidently" that Japan is working on boosting its defense capability for its own interests, Szechenyi stated.
