Home Demolition Applications Rising in Quake-Hit Ishikawa

Kanazawa, Ishikawa Pref., Feb. 8 (Jiji Press)--Ishikawa Prefecture has seen an increase in applications for publicly funded demolition of houses damaged by the January 2024 Noto Peninsula earthquake that hit the central Japan prefecture.
Since many of the damaged houses are picturesque traditional buildings, concerns are increasing that their demolition may impair the region's landscape and cultural value.
The prefectural government has launched a support program for people planning to repair damaged houses to continue to live in them or convert them into accommodation facilities.
The number of applications for publicly funded demolition totaled 36,304 as of the end of last month. The prefecture revised up the estimated number of damaged homes to be demolished to 39,235 in January from the 32,410 forecast in August last year.
Demolition work for these buildings are expected to be completed in October this year.
