Akazawa Holds Tariff Talks with Lutnick
Washington, July 22 (Jiji Press)--Japanese economic revitalization minister Ryosei Akazawa held talks with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick in Washington on Monday during his eighth trip to the United States for tariff talks between the two countries.
Akazawa and Lutnick "engaged in another frank and in-depth discussion to realize a mutually beneficial agreement for both Japan and the United States," the Japanese government said in a statement on Tuesday.
The Japanese chief tariff negotiator is believed to have reiterated Tokyo's demand that Washington reconsider its 25 pct auto tariffs and its planned reciprocal across-the-board duties on imports.
His latest U.S. trip came after Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba's ruling coalition suffered a bruising defeat in Sunday's election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of parliament.
Ishiba vowed to stay on despite the election defeat, citing a host of challenges including an Aug. 1 deadline for Japan to reach a trade deal with United States or face the steep reciprocal tariffs.
