Ishiba to Decide His Fate Based on Japan-U.S. Agreement
Tokyo, July 23 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said Wednesday he will decide whether to stay in office or resign based on a Japan-U.S. tariff agreement.
The point is "which decision I should make based on the outcome of the (Japan-U.S.) tariff negotiations," Ishiba, also president of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party, told reporters at the prime minister's office.
"I cannot say (whether to resign or not) until I carefully review the content of the agreement," he also said.
Ishiba previously indicated that he would stay on despite a humiliating defeat of the LDP and its Komeito ally in Sunday's election for the House of Councillors, the upper chamber of parliament.
On Tuesday, U.S. President Donald Trump said his country and Japan have concluded a trade agreement including 15 pct U.S. reciprocal tariffs on Japan.
