Ishiba Facing Backlash over Decision to Stay On
Tokyo, July 22 (Jiji Press)--Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is facing backlash from his ruling Liberal Democratic Party over his decision to stay on despite the party's bruising defeat in Sunday's parliamentary election.
"The people don't want to see (a leader) claim that the LDP has the most seats" in parliament, agriculture minister Shinjiro Koizumi told a news conference Tuesday, referring to the reason Ishiba repeatedly cited for his decision not to step down.
The complaint from Koizumi, a senior LDP lawmaker who is believed to have a good relationship with Ishiba, shows that the prime minister is facing increasing scrutiny following the House of Councillors election.
Several of the LDP's prefectural chapters have demanded that Ishiba step down. They included the Tochigi chapter, which is led by former LDP Secretary-General Toshimitsu Motegi, who has distanced himself from the prime minister.
On Monday night, Motegi met with LDP supreme adviser Taro Aso, and they are believed to have reaffirmed their opposition to Ishiba staying on, people familiar with their conversations said.
