Malaysian firm proposes $3.4bn metro project in Ho Chi Minh City
Gamuda Land Vietnam, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Malaysia’s Gamuda Berhad, has proposed to Ho Chi Minh City authorities the development of a metro line linking the city and the under-construction Long Thanh International Airport in neighboring Dong Nai Province.
In a Monday interview with Tuoi Tre (Youth) newspaper, a company representative revealed that the proposed line would stretch approximately 41.83 kilometers, plus an additional 4.4 kilometers of approach tracks.
It would run from Ho Chi Minh City’s Thu Thiem area to Long Thanh Commune in Dong Nai, where Long Thanh Airport is expected to be basically completed by the end of this year.
The line is designed for speeds up to 120 kph and would include 20 stations - 16 elevated and four underground - with an estimated investment of around US$3.4 billion.
The proposal follows a mid-May meeting during which Liew Bing Fooi, chairman of Gamuda Land Vietnam, met with Ho Chi Minh City’s leadership to express interest in conducting a feasibility study for this metro line, as well as potential involvement in other urban rail projects.
The proposed projects aim to enhance the city’s urban transportation capacity and promote sustainable development.
Gamuda Berhad, the parent company, is a major player in infrastructure, construction, urban development, and environmental engineering.
It pioneered the development of large-scale mass rapid transit (MRT) lines in Malaysia, with the Kajang MRT line inaugurated in 2017 as its first MRT project.
As of 2024, Gamuda Berhad had implemented more than 40 major projects across six countries and territories including Singapore, Taiwan, Australia, and Vietnam.
Since entering Vietnam in 2007, Gamuda Land Vietnam has developed several projects in Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and now-defunct Binh Duong Province, including Gamuda City, Celadon City, Eaton Park, The Meadow, and Artisan Park.
It is currently working on its eighth project, Springville - an 18.26-hectare development near Long Thanh International Airport in Dong Nai.
