Vietnam to honor soldiers from 5 nations with new monument in Hanoi

Vietnam is set to erect a monument complex in Hanoi to honor soldiers and experts from the former Soviet Union, China, Laos, Cambodia, and Cuba who supported the Southeast Asian country during its wars of resistance for national liberation, according to the Ministry of National Defense.

On Wednesday, Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, Deputy Minister of National Defense, chaired a meeting with relevant agencies and units in Hanoi to discuss the construction of the commemorative site.

The project is part of a series of activities marking the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19) and National Day (September 2).

The monument complex will be built on a 3,000-square-meter plot within the grounds of the Vietnam Museum of Military History in the capital city.

The site will feature a central structure symbolizing the support and sacrifices of foreign military personnel and specialists, crafted in bronze and designed by Vietnam.

In addition, individual monuments will be dedicated to military experts from each of the five countries.

These monuments will either be designed and constructed by the respective countries or by Vietnam, depending on each country's preference.

A commemorative relief sculpture, carved from a single block of green stone, will also be designed and executed by Vietnam.

The memorial complex will be set within a landscaped area featuring green spaces and lawns.

Agencies under the defense ministry have worked with the museum to invite leading Vietnamese sculptors to study and develop draft models of the statues.

These drafts have been submitted to the five countries for feedback from their experts.

As part of construction preparations, the agencies involved have cleared the site and mobilized the necessary materials, manpower, machinery, and equipment.

Commending the efforts of all participating agencies and units, Deputy Minister Chien urged them to accelerate the project.

He requested that the access road and central display area be completed by August 10, and that the first group of statues be finished by August 15.

He also called on the ministry's Department of External Relations to maintain close communication with the relevant countries and encourage timely feedback on the statue drafts, ensuring the project stays on schedule.
