Tokyo Core Consumer Prices Up 2.1 Pct in June

Tokyo, June 28 (Jiji Press)--Core consumer prices in central Tokyo in June rose 2.1 pct from a year before, up for the 34th straight month, the internal affairs ministry said Friday.
The core consumer price index, which excludes often volatile fresh food prices, stood at 107.0 for Tokyo's 23 densely populated special wards, against 100 for the base year of 2020.
The pace of rise in the core CPI was faster than 1.9 pct in May mainly because of higher electricity and gas charges.
Electricity rates jumped 10.8 pct and city gas prices were up 3.8 pct as government subsidies aimed at reducing the burden of those charges were cut by half. Overall energy prices rose 7.5 pct.
While the government has decided to suspend the subsidies after providing them for electricity and gas used in May, for which the charges were billed in June, it plans to bring back such financial aid for three months from usage in August.
