25 persons dead, 8 missing amid habagat, cyclones onslaught – NDRRMC

MANILA, Philippines — Twenty-five individuals were reported dead from the onslaught of the southwest monsoon (habagat) and three tropical cyclones as of 6 a.m. on Friday, the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) said.

Three of the deaths were already validated: one each in Central Luzon, Northern Mindanao, and the Caraga region, according to the NDRRMC’s latest situational report.

The other 22 deaths have yet to be validated by authorities. These are as follows:

• Nine deaths in the National Capital Region (NCR)


• Three deaths in Calabarzon


• Three deaths in Western Visayas


• Three deaths in the Negros Island Region


• Two deaths in Northern Mindanao


• One death in Mimaropa


• One death in the Davao Region

Meanwhile, eight individuals were reported missing, the NDRRMC’s tally showed.



Three missing persons were already validated: two in Western Visayas and one in Central Luzon, the agency’s data noted.

The other five missing persons have yet to be validated by authorities: two each in NCR and Calabarzon, and one in Western Visayas.

Further, the NDRRMC said 3.84 million people, or 1.06 million families, were affected by the heavy rains and severe flooding.

Three cyclones

The reported casualties came amid the onslaught of the habagat as well as Severe Tropical Storm Crising (international name: Wipha), Tropical Storm Dante (Francisco), and Typhoon Emong (Co-May).

While Crising did not make landfall in the Philippines, it affected the country until exiting the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) on the morning of July 19.

Dante likewise did not make landfall and left the PAR on Thursday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Emong made landfall in the vicinity of Agno, Pangasinan, late Thursday night.

Emong was last spotted in the vicinity of San Isidro, Abra, as of 8 a.m. on Friday, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said in its latest cyclone bulletin.

The typhoon was packing winds of up to 100 kilometers per hour (kph) and gusts of up to 165 kph while moving north-northeastward at 25 kph. /jpv
