Bereaved Son Concerned about Fading War Memories in Japan

Tokyo, Aug. 15 (Jiji Press)--An 86-year-old man whose father died in World War II worries that, with few survivors left, the conflict is becoming a thing of the past in Japan.
Representing bereaved families, Mitsuru Anzai of Fukushima Prefecture delivered a speech at Thursday's government-sponsored memorial ceremony held in Tokyo to mark the 79th anniversary of the country's surrender in the war.
As a senior official of Nippon Izokukai, a group of bereaved relatives of those who died in the war, Anzai puts his energy into nurturing storytellers.
His father, Yoichi, was sent off to serve his country in June 1943, when Anzai was 5 years old. Just five months later, Yoichi caught malaria in China and died while being transported to hospital.
A tough reality awaited Yoichi's family.
