Japan to Review Calls for Caution over Nankai Trough Quake

Japan to Review Calls for Caution over Nankai Trough Quake

Tokyo, Aug. 15 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government will assess whether its calls for caution based on the Japan Meteorological Agency's first-ever emergency information on a possible megaquake in the Nankai Trough were appropriate.
The government sees the need for the review because the warnings led to unforeseen consequences such as a wave of cancellations at lodging facilities in some regions.
The government's calls for special measures to prepare for a possible quake in the trough off the country's Pacific coast ended Thursday, one week after the emergency information was issued in the wake of a major tremblor near Miyazaki Prefecture, southwestern Japan.
Prime Minister Fumio Kishida discussed the matter with disaster management minister Yoshifumi Matsumura and other officials at the prime minister's office Thursday and instructed them to "review the steps taken and social reactions and continuously make improvements from an operational standpoint including the procedures for public alerts."
Speaking to reporters Aug. 8 after the emergency information was issued, Kishida urged the public to "reconfirm everyday earthquake preparations and get ready to evacuate immediately if a quake strikes."
