(Update) Japan Ends Call for Special Measures 1 Week after Miyazaki Quake

Tokyo, Aug. 15 (Jiji Press)--The Japanese government on Thursday ended its weeklong advisory calling on people to take special measures against a possible megaquake following a strong quake off the southwestern prefecture of Miyazaki on Aug. 8.
The call came after the Japan Meteorological Agency issued emergency information on a possible megathrust quake in the Nankai Trough off the country's Pacific coast soon after the 7.1-magnitude temblor off Miyazaki. The agency has reported no significant change in the state of plate boundaries near where the megaquake is expected to occur.
At a joint news conference with the agency, a Cabinet Office official emphasized that the lifting of the notice does not mean the risk of a massive quake has disappeared and called on the public to remain prepared for such a disaster.
Following the issuance of the advisory, some beaches were closed and water and emergency food supplies ran out at some stores.
"We must scrutinize responses to the call and work to improve our operations," the Cabinet Office official said.
