Calls for Early Snap Election Spreading within Japan's LDP

Tokyo, Aug. 15 (Jiji Press)--Calls to dissolve the Japanese House of Representatives for a snap election immediately after the Liberal Democratic Party holds a leadership election next month are spreading rapidly within the ruling party.
The idea quickly gained momentum after LDP President and Prime Minister Fumio Kishida made a surprise announcement Wednesday that he will not seek re-election in the party race and step down after the new leader is chosen.
Those pushing for an early general election believe that the LDP can come out on top in the poll for the all-important lower chamber of parliament, if the party, hurt by money scandals, can give voters an impression that it has been revamped under a freshly appointed leader.
Anticipation for an early Lower House dissolution has also started to influence lawmakers in choosing the next face of the LDP.
On Thursday, when many LDP leader hopefuls stepped up preparations to run for party presidency, many younger LDP lawmakers concerned about their voter support bases said that dissolving the Lower House this autumn is the only viable option.
