Japan Logs Trade Deficit of 621.8 B. Yen in July

   Tokyo, Aug. 21 (Jiji Press)--Japan posted a customs-cleared trade deficit of 621.8 billion yen in July, posting red ink for the first time in two months as imports swelled due to a weaker yen, a preliminary report by the Finance Ministry showed Wednesday.
   Exports grew 10.3 pct from a year before to 9,619.2 billion yen, while imports advanced 16.6 pct to 10,241 billion yen. Both marked record highs for the month of July.
   Japan saw increased imports of pharmaceutical goods and communications devices, as well as a 12.7 pct rise in crude oil imports.
   In the reporting month, the average rate of the dollar against the yen stood at 159.77 yen, up 12.3 pct from July 2023.
