"Ice Navigator" Secures Safety of Japan's Research Vessel Mirai

Aboard Research Vessel Mirai, Sept. 17 (Jiji Press)--Duke Snider, a former captain at the Canadian Coast Guard, is playing a crucial role in the voyage of the Japanese oceanographic research vessel Mirai as an "ice navigator."
Such experts specializing in navigation in areas with sea ice are necessary to secure the safety of vessels sailing in the Arctic Ocean.
Snider, 67, who is now aboard the Mirai, said that there is a "massive difference" between the current Arctic Ocean and that about 20 years ago.
About 300 individuals are believed to be certified as ice navigators worldwide by the Nautical Institute based in Britain.
Snider analyzes sea ice maps released by the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration as well as satellite images and weather information to understand the situation at sea. His main job is to collect the opinions of researchers who want to observe sea ice and propose to the researchers and the captain the sea areas the ship can go.
