Foreign Visitors to Japan Up 36 Pct in Aug.

Tokyo, Sept. 18 (Jiji Press)--The estimated number of foreign visitors to Japan in August leaped 36.0 pct from a year before to 2,933,000, the Japan National Tourism Organization said Wednesday.
The figure, which was up 16.4 pct compared with August 2019, before the COVID-19 pandemic, marked the highest level for the month of August.
Still, the number stood below three million for the first time in six months, partly because of cancellations of flights due to a typhoon.
By country or region, the number of visitors from mainland China was the largest, at 745,800, up about twofold from a year before, followed by 612,100 from South Korea, up 7.6 pct, 564,300 from Taiwan, up 42.4 pct, 246,600 from Hong Kong, up 19.6 pct, and 174,000 from the United States, up 25.8 pct.
In the first eight months of this year, the number of visitors from abroad totaled about 24 million, according to the government organization.
