Japan Eyeing Arctic Comeback thru 1st Research Icebreaker

   Tokyo, Sept. 19 (Jiji Press)--Japan hopes to make a comeback through its first Arctic research icebreaker, as it lags behind other nations despite being one of the first countries to realize the Arctic's resource potential.
   The East Asian country is building the Mirai II, aiming to put the ship into service in November 2026.
   The Mirai II project has experienced many pushbacks, at a time when countries around the world are engaging in fierce competition to build icebreakers for missions in the polar regions.
   With global warming causing less Arctic ice, moves to develop resources in the area have mounted recently.
   "Japan needs to step up its game, or else it will fall far behind," an official related to in the Mirai II project said.
