Agoda reports surge in international tourists to Thailand, Hatyai becomes top budget destination

Provided by Nation.

Agoda’s latest travel data shows Thailand remains a top destination for tourists, with an increase in visitors from China, Malaysia, and South Korea. Hatyai sees rising popularity due to affordability.

Agoda, a leading digital travel platform, has revealed the latest insights into Thailand’s tourism market for the first half of 2025. According to Agoda’s booking data, travellers from China, Malaysia, and South Korea remain the top visitors to Thailand, with Bangkok, Pattaya, and Phuket continuing to dominate as the most popular destinations.

In a notable development, Hatyai has emerged as a rising destination, particularly favoured by tourists from Malaysia and Singapore. The city’s affordability has earned it a spot as Thailand’s cheapest destination, ranking in the top 3 most budget-friendly destinations in Asia for two consecutive years. Hatyai offers a mix of vibrant activity, tranquil beaches, and rich cultural experiences.

Despite the strong influx of visitors, China maintains its lead in terms of the total number of tourists. However, travellers from South Korea spend the longest time in Thailand, followed by those from Japan, Malaysia, and Singapore.

The data also reveals that different nationalities favour specific destinations for long stays. For example:

Koh Tao (favoured by visitors from China, Japan, and Singapore) is renowned for its world-class diving sites.
Koh Phangan (popular among Malaysian tourists) offers a perfect blend of peaceful natural surroundings and renowned party scenes.
In central Thailand, Pathum Thani (favoured by South Korean tourists) provides a serene atmosphere and local lifestyle near the capital.

According to the Ministry of Tourism and Sports, Thailand saw 16 million foreign visitors between January and June 2025, generating approximately 743.58 billion baht in revenue. Government initiatives such as the Amazing Thailand Grand Tourism and Sports Year 2025 and improved travel facilitation, including increased flight availability, have contributed to Thailand’s continued status as a leading regional destination.

For Thai travellers, Tokyo, Osaka, Hong Kong, Taipei, and Seoul remain popular destinations for international travel in the first half of 2025.

Akaporn Rodkong, Country Head for Thailand at Agoda, commented: “We are honoured to be the platform that travellers across Asia trust. We are proud to support tourism in Thailand by offering a variety of accommodation options, making travel easier and more enjoyable for all.”
