MANILA, Philippines — The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has granted pardon to 68 Filipino detainees, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) announced on Tuesday.

In a statement, the DFA expressed its gratitude, noting that the humanitarian pardon was granted in celebration of Eid al-Adha in June.

“This generous and benevolent gesture is a testament to the robust bilateral relations between the Philippines and the UAE and a lasting gift to the families of the pardoned Filipinos,” the DFA said.

The agency did not elaborate on the specific charges or circumstances surrounding the Filipinos’ detention.

In his fourth State of the Nation Address, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. expressed the nation’s sincere gratitude to the Sultanate of Oman, the UAE, the State of Qatar, the Kingdom of Bahrain, the State of Kuwait, and other leaders who have granted clemency and extended compassion to “beleaguered Filipinos.”

"Through our diligent diplomatic efforts, more than 600 of our fellow Filipinos who were convicted of various legal violations abroad—particularly in the UAE, Qatar, Bahrain, and other countries—were granted pardon over the past three years," Marcos said in Filipino. /mcm/abc
