MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines’ air quality "improved" in 2024, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) reported on Monday.

In a statement, the DENR said the nationwide average concentration of Particulate Matter 10 (PM10) fell by 28.2 percent, from 39 micrograms per normal cubic meter (µg/ncm) in 2016 to 28 µg/ncm in 2024.

According to the DENR, particulate matter refers to microscopic solid or liquid particles suspended in the air, usually originating from vehicles, fossil fuel combustion, industrial processes, construction, and agricultural activities.

Air quality in Metro Manila showed a “notable improvement,” with PM10 concentrations dropping 17.4 percent, from 46 µg/ncm in 2016 to 38 µg/ncm in 2024.

The capital region also recorded a 37.6 percent decline in Particulate Matter 2.5 (PM2.5) levels, from 27 µg/ncm in 2016 to 16.86 µg/ncm in 2024.

In the same year, 22 out of 34 highly urbanized centers—or 65 percent—were found to be “within ambient air quality” standards for both PM10 and PM2.5, surpassing the 62 percent target.

PM10 are particles measuring 10 micrometers or smaller, while PM2.5 are much finer, with diameters of 2.5 micrometers or less. PM2.5 poses greater health risks as it can penetrate deep into the lungs and enter the bloodstream.

From 2022 to 2024, the EMB intensified efforts to reduce vehicular emissions, which remain the leading source of air pollution. During the period, it issued 1,807 Certificates of Conformity to Euro 4-compliant vehicles.

Euro 4 emission standards set limits on nitrogen oxide, particulate matter, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbon emissions from vehicles. All new vehicles must comply with these standards before they can be sold in the market./mcm
