MANILA, Philippines — A digital skills training program for persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) in Calapan City was recognized in an awards program of a United Nations (UN) organization, the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology (BJMP) announced.

“Project Pag-asa: Beyond Bars - Unlocking Opportunities through Digital Skills Training” was among 72 projects from across the globe to be named a 2025 World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) Prizes Champion Project.

“By providing PDLs with digital skills, we prepare them for reintegration and empower them to build a brighter future,” BJMP Mimaropa information officer Joefrie Anglo said in a statement on Wednesday.

“This acknowledgment underscores the project's alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly in promoting inclusive education and fostering digital inclusion,” the BJMP further said.

The WSIS Prizes are organized by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a specialized UN agency, in a bid to highlight the role of information and communication technologies in sustainable development.
